Library Director Builds Community in Tough Times

Virginia Niles demonstrates how librarians can work to build communities.

The poverty rate and median household income are two of the many statistics about Delaware County that jump out of the American Community Survey released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Virginia Niles, Mucie Public Library Director, is Co-Chair of the Muncie Action Plan.

Muncie isn’t alone, Nilles says.

“I suspect most communities are seeing this happening, “she said. “Technology has changed everything. Industry is moving to the third world. But it’s an exciting time. There are new opportunities. But we have to come together as a community as we have never come together before. If we all do this together, we will be successful. When we have disagreed in the past, we have stood still. We can’t afford to do that any more.
